Garage Door Cables

Garage doors have many components that help with proper movement and function. Garage door cables are critical to ensure that your garage door moves up and down smoothly and seamlessly.

What are Garage Door Cables?

Every garage door has two cables. The cables work with the extension springs in the garage door to balance the door by properly distributing tension. Although the cables are designed to work together, you will likely end up with two broken cables even if only one breaks initially, as the cable that is left is forced to absorb the load of the extension springs that have broken.

HOW TO TELL IF THE CABLES ARE BROKEN

Garage Door Cables

Broken cables in a garage door can affect how the entire garage door system works. A broken cable will cause an uneven distribution of weight, which strains the springs, rollers, tracks, and other components. Sometimes the cables will break suddenly and produce a loud snapping sound. In that case, you may notice that the door is difficult to open.

There may also be wires hanging loose from the door. A door that struggles to open may appear to have a working motor and springs intact, which is a good indication that the problem lies with the cables.

Sometimes, the cables get frayed before they break, which is another indication that you are about to have a broken cable on your hands. The cables can also come off the drums they are typically attached to. You’ll see that the cables are out of place, and the door may look crooked or lopsided. In addition to noticing something amiss visually, you may also notice that the garage door is off-balance, louder than usual, or has trouble opening. Since there are many possible reasons for your garage door malfunction, it can be difficult to figure out where the problem is coming from.

Getting the Right Cables

It is essential to get cables that are a good fit for your garage door. Cables hold spring tensions that balance the garage door’s weight, making it easy to open the garage door either with a garage door opener or manually.

Garage doors have two types of cables: lifting and safety cables. Lifting cables come in two forms:

  • Torsion springs
  • Extension springs

Torsion springs are coiled, which is how they store their energy. Torsion springs will expel the energy that they have stored when you lift the door up. Torsion springs should coil up again when you lower the door in preparation for the next lift.

Extension springs are located perpendicular to the garage door. They extend back into the garage, parallel to the tracks. The energy from extension springs is released when you lift the door open. When you close the garage door, they regain their energy, and the springs extend once again.
